CEC is a win-win for our students and employers

Central Educational Center is at it again. Since day one of planning for CEC more than a decade ago, the business community has been involved in deciding what goes on at the charter school, which offers both high school and technical school courses.

Since day one, there has always been a strong emphasis on matching the needs of students with the needs of employers in our community. This process has created a win-win situation for both students and employers.

CEC’s unique partnership between the Coweta County School System, West Central Technical College and the business community has been a huge success. The school has become a model that has been replicated in other communities. State, national and international educators and other leaders have visited CEC to take a look at this heralded educational institution where students can earn a high school diploma and a certificate from West Central simultaneously.

This fall, CEC plans additions to its curriculum as it continues to meet the needs of the business community by training students for jobs that are available in our community and in nearby communities. The courses that are being added are auto mechanics, cosmetology and law enforcement.

Coweta Schools Superintendent Blake Bass said auto mechanics and cosmetology courses were the most requested during meetings with local business leaders. The superintendent also said, “We need to be able to help our students be successful. I think these programs are going to do that.”

Both our students and our businesses have had a better chance of success because our community leaders had the vision for CEC. That vision became a reality, and today the fine-tuning of the curriculum will mean more students and more businesses will enjoy success in the years ahead.
