News and Events

March 17 - Murphy Campus Students and Staff celebrated St. Patrick’s Day and the end of the quarter with ice cream and toppings. This event was sponsored by the Student Activities Council.

Volunteers from the Student Activities Council in cooperation with Wanda Foster of the Conference Center at the Murphy Campus also helped West Central Technical College to reach our goal of forty-seven usable pints of blood at the RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE on January 22nd.  (This could actually mean fifty-five or more people had to donate to get this amount.) In addition, we would like to thank all staff members that gave and the teachers that gave credit to help us reach that goal.

Three officers of the Student Activities Council (Melissa Shadrix, Jenn Kollenburg, and Ted McMahan) attended their state meeting January 25th- through the 27th at the Crowne Plaza in Atlanta where students voted on State Officers and listened to speakers from technical colleges all over the state. The students learned additional leadership skills and got more time with state advisors and officers to problem solve and much more.

February 16-18 - Last weekend in Atlanta, students attended the state Delta Epsilon Chi Competition and Ted McMahan places 1st in the category of Retail Management.

Massages for Students

Students were offered free mini-massages on each campus December 11th and 12th  to de-stress for finals and celebrate the end of the quarter courtesy of the Student Activities Department.

December 13 - For the Student Activities Christmas Charity project, students on the committee worked with Alice’s House of Carrollton to schedule dates and coordinate sizes of children.

On Saturday December 1st, Student Activities Council Members met at Ross in Douglasville and purchased clothes for children of Alice’s House. On Sunday, December 9th a Christmas/Pizza Party was held for the nine children of Alice’s House. Alice’s House is a non-profit organization in Carroll County that houses DEFACS custody children who have often been abused or neglected. Each child received shoes, a coat or sweater, two shirts, a pair of pants, toiletries, and accessories for their coordinating outfits.

Santa (West Central Employee Peggy Cash) and students handed out the gifts. While many children may toss clothes aside in favor of toys, these children were thrilled with their new outfits. They made comments to each other such as “Girl, you’re going to look good in that at church,” or “ I can’t wait to wear this to school tomorrow.” “I love my shoes!” Each child ran to try on their clothes and there was a runway show. Following the run-way show, the kids were fed pizza and we all spent some time hanging out with them and being filled with the spirit of giving.

- The newly sponsored SAC event, Weeks of Welcome (October 2nd-12)was a huge success! Over 3,000 t-shirts and student planners were given out the first two days of class (October 2nd and 3rd) from 8 am 7:30 pm at all four campuses! Over 34 volunteers comprised of the general student body, student organization members, and faculty and staff helped to greet students and present them with give-aways. Students not only got new West Central wear, but three free breakfast opportunities at the Carroll, Douglas and Murphy Campus and a chance to meet the President, Vice Presidents, and key directors that have contact with students at the Donuts with Directors sub-event of Weeks of Welcome. Students all attended Career Services and Academic Success Workshops during the first two weeks of class.

The drive goal was 49 collected units of blood and because of civic-minded students like yourself, West Central Technical College once again exceeded our goal by collecting fifty-three units of blood from sixty West Central students. Give yourself a pat on the back!
