WCTC WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL TEAM OPENS SEASON SATURDAY
West Central Technical College continues to make history as its first women’s volleyball team takes the court Saturday at the East Carrollton Recreation Center.
WCTC opens the season with two games Saturday, the first beginning at 1 p.m. against the Bruins of Coosa Valley Tech and the second at 3 p.m. against Northwestern Tech Mustangs. Northwestern and Coosa Valley will matchup in the middle game at 2 p.m.
All three teams are beginning their inaugural seasons in a newly formed sports league of four state technical colleges which also includes the Griffin Tech Tigers.
The same four Colleges also competed in basketball.
“West Central Technical College is committed to continue offering our students more of a traditional collegiate atmosphere,” President Dr. Skip Sullivan said. “Athletics is an important part of that.”
“We look forward to growing both basketball and volleyball in the next few years,” Sullivan said. “I believe our league will possibly double in size next year as more of our sister colleges catch the sports fever. We’re excited about the opportunities this will offer our students not only to play, but also to come out and enjoy the games.”
Taking volleyball coaching duties is Chris Smith. Coach Smith is no stranger to volleyball fans in West Georgia, as he also serves as varsity volleyball coach at Central High School in Carrollton. Smith led Central’s squad to the sweet sixteen in 2006 and the regional playoffs in 2007.
The team is awash in local talent.
Carroll County players are Stephanie Howard (number 22), an outside hitter from Villa Rica High School; Erin Key (18), a defensive specialist from Bowdon High; Deidra Musick (6), libero and outside hitter from Central High; Brittany Neese (10), a middle blocker from Central High; and Ruby Nunn (12), a middle blocker from Carrollton High.
From Coweta County are Marie Holbrook (2), a middle blocker and inside hitter from Northgate High School; and Madison Moye (14), an outside hitter from East Coweta High.
Out of Douglas County comes Kaylee Wren (13), setter and middle blocker from Alexander High.
Games are open to the public and admission is free.
