WCTC RN STUDENTS ATTEND CONVENTION
Two Registered Nursing students and an instructor represented West Central Technical College at the National Student Nurses’ Association annual convention this spring.
RN Instructor Japonica Morris accompanied students Shawn Green and Rebekah Yontz to Grapevine, Texas March 27-30, joining over 3,000 participants from around the country.
“The convention was filled with focus sessions, house of delegate meetings, elections and fundraisers,” said Morris, who advises the College’s chapter of NSNA. “It was an exciting opportunity for our students to meet their peers from around the country and hear some of the exciting happenings in our field.”
“I am very pleased with our College’s participation in the NSNA,” President Dr. Skip Sullivan said. “It is helpful for students to get a broad view of whatever field they are studying. National conventions are a great way to do this. We are proud of the way our students and our instructors represent us on the national level.”
Green – who along with Yontz is completing his first year of WCTC’s two-year associate degree nursing program – said they attended focus groups concentrating on different areas of nursing, plenary sessions for “insight and motivation” and the meeting of delegates for official voting on issues.
“It was great for us to see that the coursework and issues that affect us are the same for our peers at other schools across the country,” Green said. “Our program stacks up very well even with bachelor’s degree programs from prestigious universities.”
“Students were also given the opportunity to network with potential employers, publishers, and other schools of nursing,” Morris said.
Green and Yontz have made formal presentations of their experience to their classmates and instructors, and Morris said they spoke highly of the experience – recommending it to their peers.
The National Student Nurses’ Association represents over 50,000 students in associate degree, diploma, baccalaureate, and generic masters and generic doctoral programs.
West Central Technical College, with campuses in Carroll, Coweta, Douglas and Haralson counties, offers over 90 associate degree, diploma and technical certificate programs of study. A unit of the Technical College System of Georgia, West Central last year served over 10,000 students including credit enrollment, adult education, ESL classes, continuing education and corporate training.
