CELEBRATING LITERACY WEEK: AUTHOR READS TO GED STUDENTS
|
Elaine Bailey, a part-time instructor in adult education at West Central Technical College, is also a published author. In celebration of Georgia Literacy Week Sept. 8-12, Bailey read to her class excerpts from three books – Buttermilk Clouds, Patchwork of Poetry and Tracks, a full length novel which she hopes to have published in the summer of 2009. Tracks is a fictional story of a dyslexic student in the 1960s South. In the course of the story, the student reveals how he innocently gets into the drug culture, on marijuana at age eight, cocaine by age 10 and in juvenile jail by age 15. Toward the end of the book, this character not only overcomes his addiction and finally gets his education as an adult, but becomes a very successful businessman and social reformer at the state level. Bailey plans to begin writing the story of the Villa Rica explosion after publication of Tracks. West Central offers free GED preparation classes for adults in Carroll, Coweta, Douglas and Haralson counties, as well as state-certified GED testing and classes in English as a Second Language. More information is available at www.westcentraltech.edu or by calling 770.838.3192.
