West Central Technical College made history Saturday, January 12, playing the first intercollegiate basketball game in school history against the Griffin Tech Tigers. The West Central Golden Knights fell 62-52 in a very competitive contest hosted by the Griffin squad.

“We are extremely proud of the way our team played today,” President Dr. Skip Sullivan said. “It was a great day for West Central. We have begun a new era in the history of our school that offers our students tremendous new opportunities.”

West Central Tech is playing in a league with three other Technical College System of Georgia colleges, Coosa Valley Tech, Griffin Tech and Northwestern Tech. Several other schools are expected to join the league in the next few seasons.

“It has been a lot of fun already working with our sister colleges to put the season together,” Vice President of Student Affairs Eddie Gore said. “Now the true fun begins – the games.” Gore is acting as the College representative as it relates to other league teams.

During the first half of the inaugural game, WCTC led three times and ended the 20-minute half down by 4 points. The score was 26 – 30 at the break.

“We played a good second half, coming within 3 points at one time but never regained the scoring advantage,” Gore said. “Great defense but a few key turnovers allowed for the final score to go in favor of the Tigers, 62 – 52.

Dale Boykin, a guard from Carrollton, scored the College’s first two points from the free-throw line. Boykin is a graduate of Villa Rica High School and attends classes on the Carroll and Murphy campuses.

Leading scorers for the Knights were Garyeon Boykin of Carrollton with 15 points, Dale Boykin with 11 points and Reggie Nation of Carrollton with 9 points.

Buddy Knapp, a longtime coaching fixture in area high schools, is serving as head coach of the Golden Knights. Knapp coached at Carrollton High School from 1977-1987 with a record of 152-94, including four trips to the state tournament and three Carroll County Championships. He served as head coach for both football and boys basketball at Carroll County’s Mt. Zion High School in the 1990s. Knapp is assisted by Coach Ed Mann. Knapp was out-of-town Saturday, with Mann taking head coaching duties.

The West Central Golden Knights will take on the Bruins of Coosa Valley Tech Saturday, January 19 in a home game played at the Whitesburg City Gym. Tipoff is at 2:30 p.m.

“We encourage the public to come out and root for our team,” Sullivan said. “We want the team to be a source of pride for all the communities we serve.”
